| This is the episode that started it all! The genius Sakuragi Hanamichi entered SHOHOKU HIGH! Then on his first day of school, just when this red hair boy was worrying over he's unfortunate junior high love history. A beautiful young girl named Haruko appeared before his eyes. "Do you like basketball?" The instant Sakuragi's eyes met up with the young girl's, he fell in love! The sadness caused by the receiving 50 rejections from girls in junior high disappeared like a cloud! "YES! I'M A SPORTSMAN!" Answered Sakuragi as he started a series of training to enhance his athletic abilities. The young high school freshman Sakuragi was notorious in junior high as one of the toughest gangsters ever to be born in Kanagawa. Naturally, this reputation followed him to Shohoku high as well. On the end of the first day of school, Sakuragi Hanamichi was challenged by bad senior students from the Judo club to a fight on top of the school building. But even before Hanamichi showed up for the fight, another person appeared on the roof, his name is RUKAWA KAEDE. |

| Sakuragi Hanamichi was dumped by Yoko, a girl he really like in Junior High but she likes Oda, a basketball player. The sad Hanamichi enters Shohoku High School followed by his gang, the Sakuragi guntai. When he stand and look outside the window, a girl, Haruko, touches his muscles, saying that he is strong and tall. She asked him whether she likes basketball. When he saw her, he felt in love at once. He said he loves it. She even taught him how to do a slam dunk. So he undergoes training in school. The problem is that he trains at the wrong place and at the wrong time (the clroom corridor of the 3th yr students). So he got some problems with some 3th yr students (which happens to be Mitsui's gang) and taunted him for a fight at the roof building of the school after school. When Mitsui's gang reached the roof first, they saw a freshmen, who was sleeping. One of the guys kicked him at the back and he wakes up telling them nobody disturbs him when he's sleeping. He was Rukawa Kaede..... |

| Poor Sakuragi Hanamichi enters his first year in Shohoku High School, still reeling from being dumped for the 50th time by a girl named Yuko for basketball player, Oda. Because of this, he develops an intense hatred for anything and everything about the sport. His infamous Guntai, composed of Mito Yohei, Nozomi Takamiya, Yuji Ohkusu and Chuichiro Noma, never cease in teasing him about his bad luck with girls, causing them to fall victim to their friend's headbutts. Enter fellow Freshman Akagi Haruko, a big basketball fan, who mistakenly identifies our hero as a basketball player. Attracted to the girl, he embarks on a special training program to impress Haruko, which causes him to get into an altercation with some Senior year punks led by Norio Hotta. One day, Haruko brings Sakuragi to the school gym and teaches him the art of slam dunk. To demonstrate his "prowess", Sakuragi attempts to do a dunk, running with the ball (not dribbling it) and successfully dunks his head on the backboard. Nevertheless, Haruko was impressed with Sakuragi's high jump that she immediately enlists him in the Shohoku basketball club. Unfortunately, our poor hero soon learns from his snooping "Army" and from Haruko herself that she has a huge crush on another Freshman named Rukawa Kaede, who was a star basketball player for Tomigaoka Junior High. This news leaves Sakuragi heartbroken once more. Meanwhile, Hotta and his gang challenge Sakuragi to a fight on the rooftop. Going ahead, however, Hotta and co. discover a sleeping Freshman, and rouse him from his slumber with a kick. Furious that his sleep was disturbed, he knocks Hotta's friend out with a swift kick to the gut. When asked who he was, the Freshman introduced himself as Rukawa Kaede. |
