| Episode Summary |
| Yasuda is in possession of the ball. He passes to Kogure, who then passes to Rukawa. Rukawa shoots, making the score 45-50. Taoka calls for a time out and he scolds his team for not maintaining a 30 pts lead. He tells Uozumi to beat Akagi. Sendoh, however, who is happily sucking on a lemon, tells his coach that Shohoku is not to be underestimated because they are not a weak team. He even adds that it's okay to lose to them, a comment which causes Taoka to blow his stack at his star player even more. He then tells his boys to go on man-to-man defense -- with Uozumi paired up against Akagi and Sendoh against Rukawa. Suddenly, they all turn to find a bandanna-clad, megaphone-bearing Sakuragi spying on them. All are pissed off, especially Koshino who grabs him by the shirt, and accuses him of not taking the game seriously. Of course, Sakuragi starts throwing insults as well, calling Koshino and Taoka ugly. Hikoichi tries in vain to intervene, but is thrown to the far corner of the Ryonan gym by Sakuragi. Seeing the heated, but very amusing exchange between his teammates and the redhead, Sendoh burst into merry laughter. Sakuragi immediately focuses his ire on Sendoh, but thankfully, Akagi hits him on the head, as the others in Shohoku haul him bodily away. As Akagi apologizes to Taoka, the Ryonan coach tells the beleaguered Captain to get rid of Sakuragi. Sendoh, however, says that Akagi will never do that. In order to control him, Sakuragi is tied to a chair, with Ayako blowing "brain freeze" on his head to cool him down. He again begs Anzai to let him play, but Anzai merely chortles at each plea. Infuriated, Sakuragi stands up (still tied to the chair, mind you) and rubs his head hard against the coach's forehead. Meanwhile, Sendoh, who has the ball, smiles at an angry Sakuragi before focusing on his guard, namely Rukawa. He passes to Uozumi. Because he can't get through Akagi's guard, he passes to a quick Sendoh who scores. Sakuragi is furious, more so when Sendoh waves his finger at him, daring him to join the game. Fired up by that challenge, Sakuragi breaks free from his bonds, determined to beat Sendoh. However, he instead gets into an exchange of insults again with Koshino and Taoka. Losing his temper, Akagi roars at Sakuragi to sit down. The Gundan are amazed to see their stubborn friend plop down in his chair, clearly intimidated by Gori. As the game progresses, Uozumi is fouled due to pushing and the Ryonan center ends up quarreling with the referee. Kogure immediately thanks the ref, but is rewarded by a scowl from Uozumi. Yasuda has the ball, but is unable to pass to Rukawa who is guarded by Sendoh. Instead, he passes to Shiozaki. Suddenly, the unbelievable happens. Anzai lays his hand on Sakuragi's leg and tells him to warm-up. Not knowing what a warm-up is, Sakuragi rails at Anzai, until Ayako reveals to him that he will be allowed to enter the game. Excited, Sakuragi performs his lightning-fast ball handling exercise, stunning everyone in the gym. Ayako is happy at Sakuragi's exuberance, but quickly gets annoyed when he won't shut up. When she yells for him to stop, Sakuragi collapses to the floor, exhausted. Nevertheless, our hero is very excited to get into the game. Or is it truly excitement? Slowly, he begins to realize that he is growing nervous by the minute. With 10 minutes left in the game, Ryonan is still in the lead by 7 points. Sakuragi fears that he might fail the team. He is even more afraid that he might disappoint Haruko. Although he desperately tells him to relax, it doesn't work. Soon, following a collision, Uozumi hit Akagi in the right eye with his elbow, drawing blood. As he goes to the clinic, Akagi surprisingly turns to Sakuragi and tells him that he will take his place. At 9 mins (61-68), Sendoh is happy that Sakuragi is going to join the game...until he sees the redhead walking into the court and past him like a robot. The Gundan could only shake their heads in dismay, seeing Sakuragi's stiff entrance, saying that poor Shohoku has surrendered the game. Of course, everyone in Shohoku is nervous about Sakuragi's debut, with the notable exception of Kogure. Unfortunately, their apprehensions prove true, as Sakuragi is not in good mental condition to play. Kogure passes to Sakuragi, but he moves stiffly -- stepping 3 times. Travelling, of course. All collapse in shock. Sakuragi is told to guard Uozumi, but he's as stiff as a statue. He is absolutely petrified. Nevertheless, he jumps when Uozumi fakes a shot. However, he lands on top of Uozumi, who ends up with a bleeding head wound as well. All in Ryonan start blaming Sakuragi, while those in Shohoku ask him if he's all right. But Sakuragi is too scared and too deep in shock to understand what's going on around him. Suddenly, he is awakened by a fierce kick. It was Rukawa. That wakes Sakuragi up. He demands to know why Rukawa kicked him, to which his rival replies that he needs to be woken up because he's too nervous. Before everyone's shocked eyes, Rukawa and Sakuragi start fighting. Taoka suggests to Kogure that Shohoku forfeit the game, but the poor coach is promptly pounded by an angry Sakuragi. Pointing a finger at Ryonan, Sakuragi declares that the real game has just begun. |
